Dr Mihai Borsau works underground with fellow researcher William Schey to field test the CSIRO Nuclear Probe, used by mining companies to assess the geological strata of commercial sites.

The probe also has the potential to aid in tackling the problem of acid rain, by helping miners avoid coals with high sulphur concentrations. CSIRO also hopes to use the probe to measure salt concentrations in the fight against dryland salinity.
