Cross Section of Blood Vessel With Hendra Virus

Top
In 1994-95 a new virus appeared in Queensland, killing two humans and fifteen horses in two separate outbreaks. In January 1999, another horse, near Cairns, died of the disease. This virus is now called Hendra virus. This slide shows a cross section of blood vessel taken from the lung of an infected horse. Note the multinucleated (giant) cells situated on the lining of the blood vessel. These giant cells are caused by the virus.
