CSIRO is conducting research into the biological control of blackberry (Rubus fruticosus aggregate) – one of the weeds of national significance (WONS) – using rust fungus.

The newly released strains of the European blackberry rust fungus (Phragmidium violaceum) are highly host-specific for weedy blackberries.
