Treatment of Raw Prawns to Control Black Spot

The CSIRO Division of Food Research has developed a prototype machine in which raw prawns can be treated with a sulphite dip soon after they are caught to control black spot.

The prototype dipping machine has a rotary action which ensures that each prawn is thoroughly treated with the dip solution. 5,000 kilograms of prawns can be dipped in an hour.

Machines incorporating important principles of controlled sulphite dipping can be designed to fit any vessel.
