Specific Image Licences

Schools Licence
This licence governs the use of free images (low resolution only) that you download from our website for school use (primary and secondary) such as projects and activity sheets.

Media Release Licence
This licence governs free images that you download from our website for the purposes of using the image in conjunction with a CSIRO media release or media story about CSIRO.

Commercial Licence
You are able to purchase the right to use the images directly from our website or images can be supplied on CD-ROM. Such images can be reproduced and/or distributed as part of any advertisement, book or other medium anywhere where in the world.

Staff Licence
CSIRO staff can use any scienceimage image for certain INTERNAL publications without permission from the Division that supplied the image, but with acknowledgement to the author of the image.

Australian Educational Publisher Licence
This licence is restricted to Australian rights, and available only for reproduction in educational publications with print runs of under 5000 copies. Publishers may download images directly from our website or images can be supplied on CD-ROM.

Government / Research / Educational Licence
This licence is for use by Australian educational institutions, government departments and agencies, and not-for-profit research organisations. Images may be downloaded directly from our website or can be supplied on CD-ROM.

The terms and conditions constitute a legal agreement between you and CSIRO. ("CSIRO " "WE" or "OUR") to use this website. Please read this agreement ("Agreement") in its entirety before you continue to use this website or download any image. By clicking the button that stipulates agreement to the following Terms and Conditions and by using this website, you agree to be bound by the Terms and Conditions of this Agreement. If you do not agree, please click the decline button and discontinue using the site.

As part of the above licence arrangements, we require that a credit reading "© CSIRO" or variations of this as specified in a particular image appears adjacent to the images or on an obvious credits page or screen. The images are not licensed for use on another server or in a downloadable format. You may, however, make one copy of the Image for backup purposes only and use this copy if the original Image becomes defective, destroyed or otherwise irretrievably lost.

Your fee for an image grants you a licence for one-time usage only. If you decide to reuse that image, you need to purchase another image licence.

Schools Licence

Intended users of this licence are students and teachers in primary and secondary schools.

1. Any part of a commercial product including educational products;
2. Website, online and multimedia designs;
3. Advertising and promotion campaigns, presentation and brochures;
4. Book jackets and interior pages;
5. Packaging for software, music albums, CDs, cassettes or videos;
6. Calendars, greeting cards or posters;
7. Trade show displays, billboards or exhibits; or
8. Products for resale in any quantity.

You are strictly prohibited from using any image in conjunction with any defamatory, libelous, misleading, pornographic or otherwise unlawful material.

Media Release Licence

Images may be used to illustrate newspaper, magazine or on-line articles or television programs specifically about CSIRO research projects. Images used to illustrate on-line articles must be no larger than 72 dpi. Images used by you by virtue of a Media Release Licence are not to be used in any other way, either internal or external.

Unless otherwise agreed in writing by CSIRO, CSIRO materials must not be used to state or imply the endorsement by CSIRO or by any CSIRO employee of a commercial product, service or activity, and must not be used in any other manner that might mislead.

A condition of this licence is that you supply CSIRO with a copy or outline of the story for which you have downloaded the image(s).

You are strictly prohibited from using any image in conjunction with any defamatory, libelous, misleading, pornographic or otherwise unlawful material.

Commercial Licence

When you purchase the right to use images from our website or on CD-ROM for, commercial use, you are licensed to use the Images in any medium. Such uses include:

1. Any part of a commercial product including educational products;
2. Website, online and multimedia designs;
3. Advertising and promotion campaigns, presentation and brochures;
4. Book jackets and interior pages;
5. Packaging for software, music albums, CDs, cassettes or videos;
6. Calendars, greeting cards or posters;

Staff Licence

CSIRO staff can use any scienceimage image for the following INTERNAL publications without permission from the Division that supplied the image, but with acknowledgement to the author of the image.

• CSIRO Publicity material eg brochures, information sheets.
• Powerpoint presentations
• Conference papers

CSIRO staff may use an scienceimage image for the following EXTERNAL publications only with the permission of the Division that supplied the image and by acknowledging the author of the image.

• Research Papers
• Books
• CD-ROMs or other disc based media
• Websites

Wherever possible, the author of the image, ie the photographer, should be acknowledged by name.

Images which have the codes ATxxxx, GBxxxx, JMxxxx, KGxxxx, RKxxxx and NSxxxx may NOT be used under the Staff Licence for external publications but must be purchased under the Commercial Licence. AT, GB, JM, KG, RK and NS images are the property of private (non-CSIRO) photographers. Please contact publishing.photos@csiro.au if further clarification is required.

Government / Research / Education Licence

CSIRO reserves the right to determine which groups are eligible to purchase images under the Government/Research/Educational Licence.

When you purchase the right to use images from our website or on CD-ROM under this licence, you are licensed to use the images in any medium for any purpose other than the promotion of a commercial product or service.

Unless otherwise agreed in writing by CSIRO, CSIRO materials must not be used to state or imply the endorsement by CSIRO or by any CSIRO employee of a commercial product, service or activity, and must not be used in any other manner that might mislead.

You are strictly prohibited from using any image in conjunction with any defamatory, libelous, misleading, pornographic or otherwise unlawful material.

* Please note: At present, this licence does not allow for automatic payment and downloading. Requests for use of this licence must be made to the scienceimage administrator at publishing.photos@csiro.au.

Australian Educational Publisher Licence

When you purchase the right to use images from our website or on CD-ROM for an educational commercial use, you are licensed to use the images in any educational book including:

• textbooks 
• other books and CD-ROMs of an educational nature. CSIRO Publishing reserves the right to determine publications that fall into this category.

You are strictly prohibited from using any image in conjunction with any defamatory, libelous, misleading, pornographic or otherwise unlawful material.
